The winter edition of Pitti Uomo, a renowned menswear event, once again showcased not just fashion but also the timeless appeal of wristwatches. This year, the Rolex Explorer emerged as the undisputed star of the show. Whether it was a modern reference, a vintage piece, or even the GMT-enhanced Explorer II, Rolex's understated classic took center stage, overshadowing the usual favorites like Submariners and GMT-Masters.
While Rolex dominated, other timepieces also made their mark. Rectangular watches, a trend from the summer edition, continued to gain traction. Parmigiani, a brand rarely seen in such settings, made a notable appearance, while the Casio F-91w, a cult favorite, found its advocates among the stylish crowd.
One attendee shared his personal connection to the Rolex Explorer: "The Explorer was my grail watch. I wanted the 2014 version because it was the year my son was born, and I wanted to be able to pass it on to him one day." This sentiment highlights the emotional value that often accompanies these timepieces.
Other watches that stood out included a Heuer pilot's chronograph, a lesser-known gem in the brand's automotive-focused lineup, and a Ulysse Nardin passed down from father to son. The latter, chosen for its naval origins, carries a sentimental weight that transcends its design.
Meanwhile, a Chopard L.U.C with a salmon dial and a grey strap caught the eye of another attendee, who praised its unique aesthetic. And for those who prefer simplicity, the Casio F-91w remains a reliable choice, with one enthusiast replacing his every decade.
A 1972 Rolex Explorer ref. 1016 summed up the appeal of the model: "For me, the most important thing about this watch was the simplicity. The 36mm size is perfect for every wrist. The markers, the dial, the screw-down crown—it's perfect for me." This blend of functionality, elegance, and timeless design continues to make the Explorer a favorite among watch enthusiasts.
Pitti Uomo once again proved that while fashion trends come and go, the allure of a well-crafted watch remains eternal.
