Forty years ago, Casio revolutionized the watch industry with the introduction of the G-SHOCK, a timepiece designed to withstand extreme conditions. Created by engineer Kikuo Ibe, the original G-SHOCK DW5000-C set a new standard for durability, famously showcased in commercials where it survived being used as a hockey puck. To celebrate its 40th anniversary, Casio has reissued the iconic DW5000-C as the DW5000R-1A. Produced at the Yamagata factory, where the first G-SHOCK was made, this revival model stays true to the original design while incorporating subtle modern updates. The stainless steel case, wrapped in black resin, mirrors the 1983 model, though the case size has been slightly increased to 42.3mm to suit contemporary tastes. The resin strap, complete with its signature dimples and raised blocks, has also been meticulously recreated.
While the exterior pays homage to the original, the DW5000R-1A introduces eco-friendly materials, with the strap and case cladding made from bio-based resin. The watch retains its 200m water resistance, mineral crystal, and screw-lock caseback, but now features a bright white LED backlight for improved visibility. The dial remains faithful to the 1983 design, with its black, white, yellow, and red color scheme and the iconic brick pattern framing the LCD screen.
Inside the DW5000R-1A beats the same digital quartz Module 3576 found in the original, offering essential functions like a stopwatch, alarm, timer, and automatic calendar. Minor text updates, such as "20Bar" replacing "200M," are the only noticeable changes. This revival model is a testament to the enduring appeal of the G-SHOCK, offering both new enthusiasts and longtime fans a chance to own a piece of horological history.
