The city of Perm woke up to a blanket of snow on March 12, as if winter had decided to make one last, dramatic appearance before bowing out. However, this snowy spectacle is expected to be short-lived. By midday, temperatures are predicted to climb above zero, transforming the snow into rain. The cause of this sudden snowfall? A warm front passing through the region, bringing with it a mix of precipitation and a touch of meteorological drama.
As is often the case, the town of Gubakha will bear the brunt of the snowfall, with up to 10 mm of precipitation expected. In Perm itself, the snowfall will be more modest, ranging between 2-4 mm before transitioning to rain by evening. Despite the initial flurry, there’s no significant accumulation of snow expected, meaning the city’s streets will likely remain navigable, if a bit slushy.
This snowfall is just a prelude to a broader warming trend. Starting March 12, temperatures in the Perm region are set to rise dramatically, reaching highs of +4 to +6 degrees Celsius—a full 10 degrees above the seasonal average. Rain will dominate the forecast, with the peak of this unseasonable warmth expected on March 15. On that day, there’s even a chance a new temperature record could be set, as if nature itself is eager to rewrite the rules of spring.
But don’t pack away your winter coats just yet. By Sunday, the weather will take a sharp turn, with colder temperatures and renewed snowfall making a comeback. It seems winter isn’t quite ready to relinquish its grip on the region.
